Felton Road ‘Cornish Point’ 2016 Release . . .

We are delighted that our new delivery of wine from Felton Road, New Zealand, is on its way to us as we speak!

Felton Road is located in Central Otago which is the most inland region of New Zealand, located in the southern half of the South Island. The winery is made up of 4 vineyards, one of which is ‘Cornish Point’, an old gold miners settlement where the first large find of gold was made in the Central Otago gold rush. It was named after the Cornish gold miners who lived there and was abandoned in the late 19th century until planted as an apricot orchard in the mid 20th century, followed by grape vines in 2000.

The soils are deep, fine and sandy, lying on beds of ancient river gravel, typical of the heavy soils most suited to Pinot Noir vines.
The vineyard is 7.6 hectares in size, with 4040 vines per hectare cleverly orientated so they receive an extra hour of morning sun and one less of the hotter afternoon sun.

Fruit from ‘Cornish Point’ is some of the first to ripen and is often the first to be picked out of the 4 vineyards. The grapes display dense fruit, with surprising tannin for young vines. The bouquet is intense, floral and spicy. Flavours are always dark, with pronounced secondary notes rather than simple primary fruit. The viticulture is fully organic and biodynamic certified.

Demand for ‘Cornish Point’ wines is very high, so we are very fortunate to have gained an allocation of 3 varieties including the Bannockburn Riesling which will not be available from any other merchants in the UK..
